Spoken Malayalam classes
Bini Nampoothiri (in Austin, Texas) has been providing spoken Malayalam classes to her community and donating all proceeds towards Karunya. If you would like to join her program please fill in the contact form on the right with your details (including phone number) and add "Malayalam class" in the subject and someone will be in touch with you to coordinate. All your information will remain private.
Current Need
Generator - Cost of approx. $700
The current generator at Karunya is at its end of life (over 15 years old). With the monsoon season and utility issues, they will need to purchase a new generator. A 2 KVA Honda generator
Future Plans
Floor Tiling in Common residential area for approx. 2000 sq ft - Cost of approx. $1500
The current floor in the common area is just a cement floor from the original constructon. They would like to replace it with slip resistent tiles for added benefit for the elderly as they walk there.
Special Needs Education Program
Karunya is working with an organization that provides special needs education for physically and mentally challenged children. We are going to start a vocational training center for physically and mentally challenged children through a robotic lab. Each student will be assessed by a system and vocational training will be given as per the individual need. Also they have plans to manufacture mechanical prosthetic limbs if any child/adult needs it.
Organic Farming Project
Organic vegetable farming. This is a seasonal ongoing work. The major cost would be the labour. Say if we get two men 3 days a week it will be 24 man days @ $ 10 = 240 $ a month. + manure and other materials say $ 10 a month. Total 250 $ a month. When compared to the cost of vegetable for a month - currently we buy is only $ 100 - growing vegetable is going to be expensive. Our consumption of vegetable is very nominal as most of the days lunches are sponsored by donors celebrating birthdays and death anniversaries of people. The only advantage is that the food will be Organic and healthy. We have 10 mango trees and 30 coconut palms in Karunya.
